        "rendered": "<p>The Venice of the Perigord is the jewel of the Perigord with the river Dronne encircling the town.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mimg aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/th?id=OIP._nHzlVGrJl6AI4qbsGiymwHaFj&amp;w=252&amp;h=189&amp;c=7&amp;o=5&amp;pid=1.7\" alt=\"Image result for Brantome\" width=\"252\" height=\"189\" data-bm=\"28\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The town has a nice mix of medieval and renaissance architecture to admire. The town is classed as one of &#8216;le Plus Beau Village&#8217; in France.<\/p>\n<p>The Benedictine Abbey on the river&#8217;s edge is superb and this along with the old stone bridge, weir and pretty mill now turned into a splendid Michelin starred hotel and restaurant all make for a very picturesque scene.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pswp__img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/images\/stories\/brantome\/river-view-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Look inside the abbey as well (built by Charlemagne in 769 and the main historical highlight of the town) and at the troglodyte section behind the abbey including the famous cave of the &#8216;Last Judgement&#8217;. These are the remains of the original abbey and during the summer you can do a night-time visit of the troglodyte section &#8211; very atmospheric.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/images\/stories\/brantome\/brantome-1.jpg\" alt=\"Brantome abbey\" width=\"332\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pswp__img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/images\/stories\/brantome\/bridge.jpg\" width=\"331\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is above all the situation of Brantome on the river Dronne, that encircles a large part of the town, and the steep wooded slopes around the town, that add most to its attraction. The river is calm and gentle at this point, covered with water lilies, and sheltered by weeping willows.<br \/>\nIt is very pleasant to walk along the edge of the river and through the river-side gardens. Brantome really is one of the most attractive towns of the Dordogne area and well worth a trip.<br \/>\nCanoes can be hired at Brantome for a relaxing glide along the river (a favourite with adults and children).<br \/>\nBrant\u00f4me market day is Friday and on Friday&#8217;s Brantome is particularly animated and colourful!<\/p>\n<h3>Brantome &#8211; things to do<\/h3>\n<p>Hire a canoe for half a day or a day and enjoy this lovely stretch of the river.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/images\/stories\/brantome\/brantome-2.jpg\" alt=\"canoeing in Brantome\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Visit the Peyrelevade Dolmen on the right bank of the river, a preserved megalithic monument.<\/p>\n<p>There is a garden to visit at Brantome &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesjardinstranquilles.com\/fr\/parc-brantome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jardins Tranquille<\/a>. This runs along the edge of the river and is very pretty.<\/p>\n<p>Take a leisurely lunch in one of the many restaurants or a cruise on the water. Every Friday evening wander around the night market and watch the joisting on the water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mimg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/th?id=OIP.Jyg5faIwdk89XLdDtymnlgHaFj&amp;w=240&amp;h=177&amp;c=7&amp;o=5&amp;pid=1.7\" alt=\"Image result for brantome\" width=\"240\" height=\"177\" data-bm=\"99\" \/> \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mimg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/th?id=OIP.OKLcLsbPi2v8Uet5CZeAoAHaFj&amp;w=258&amp;h=193&amp;c=7&amp;o=5&amp;pid=1.7\" alt=\"Image result for brant\u00f4me joute\" width=\"258\" height=\"193\" data-bm=\"32\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mimg vimgld\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/th?id=OIP.Gd9jm5Rk6mEtHgIvUVjFdAHaFj&amp;w=283&amp;h=206&amp;c=7&amp;o=5&amp;pid=1.7\" alt=\"Image result for brant\u00f4me joute\" width=\"283\" height=\"206\" data-bm=\"56\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Places to Visit Nearby<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bourdeilles.fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bourdeilles<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/chateaubourdeilles.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bourdeilles chateau<\/a> are 7km to the south, on the River Dronne and make a pleasant excursion. Also the <a href=\"http:\/\/grotte-villars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grotte de Villars.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pull-right thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/images\/grotte-villars-1.jpg\" alt=\"Grotte de Villars\" width=\"192\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mimg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/th?id=OIP.jkTqnq-Y2a33l0vB0iWaAwHaDu&amp;w=299&amp;h=151&amp;c=7&amp;o=5&amp;pid=1.7\" alt=\"Image result for bourdeilles dordogne\" width=\"299\" height=\"151\" data-bm=\"28\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mimg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/th?id=OIP.m2uy-1gVCdbmDyK9YOcGRQHaE7&amp;w=270&amp;h=177&amp;c=7&amp;o=5&amp;pid=1.7\" alt=\"Image result for ch\u00e2teau de jumilhac\" width=\"270\" height=\"177\" data-bm=\"32\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the river Cole to the north-east of Brantome, two attractive villages are to be found &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/la-chapelle-faucher.php\">La Chapelle-Faucher<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/st-jean-de-cole.php\">St-Jean-de-Cole<\/a> &#8211; that warrant a visit, and then nearby at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/thiviers.php\">Thiviers <\/a>there is an interesting &#8216;Roman style&#8217; church.<\/p>\n<p>Continue another 10km north through the forests of northern Dordogne and you will reach the fairy-tale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/chateaujumilhac.php\">chateau de Jumilhac<\/a><\/p>",
